C)Mississippi river flooded. In 1926, the Mississippi river flooded to its highest level in history, destroying towns and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. Since then, dams and thousands of kilometers of levees have been built to control the mighty Mississippi. 60 years on, another effect of the historic flood is becoming apparent. As the river has become calmer. It now also carries a lot less of the sediment that created and replenished the delta. Without that. More than 13 thousand square kilometers of the delta — an area 10 times the size of London — is slowly slipping into the Gulf of Mexico. Once again the river is threatening to displace thousands and drown the fragile delta wetlands.                                                                               mississippi river flooded

The change of the Mississippi over decades is just one of the hundreds of stories of similarly dramatic change around the globe; from the draining of the Aral Sea in the Middle East for crops. To the effects of dam construction in China, or the impacts of the multi-year drought on the Western U.S. Water has been shaping our planet since it was formed. And still plays a direct and crucial role in all of our lives.

It took three years to download 1.8 petabytes of data from the USGS/NASA Landsat satellite program and prepare that for analysis. Each pixel in 3 million satellite images, going all the way back to 1984. Was examined by a computer algorithm developed by the Joint Research Center running on the. Google Earth Engine platform. More than 10 million hours of computing time was needed for this, roughly equivalent to a modern 2-core computer running day and night for 600 years.

Mississippi river flooded. The results for the first time allow us to map. And measure changes in the water surface over time with a 30-meter accuracy. Month-by-month, over 32 years. Here are some of our findings:

  • 90 thousand square kilometers of water – the equivalent of half of the lakes in Europe – have vanished altogether. Over 200 thousand square kilometers of new, mostly man-made water bodies came into existence.
  • The continuing drying up of the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan accounts for the biggest loss in the world.
  • Iran and Afghanistan lost over a half, Iraq over a third of its water area.
  • Although the area covered by water in the U.S. has overall increased a little. A combination of drought. And sustained demand for water have seen six western states. Arizona. California. Idaho. Nevada. Oregon, Utah, account for a third of the loss in U.S. water surface.

The research findings and the maps. F)published today in the journal Nature, are available for you to explore on. G)This new website. The data are also freely available in Google Earth Engine for further research, use, and download. These new maps, statistics and the stories of change they reveal provide essential information which can aid global water security. Agricultural planning, disaster preparedness, public health. C)We’re excited to announce today that, in a collaboration led by Dr. Matthew Hansen at the University of Maryland, we’ve built the first detailed maps of the world’s forests, from 2000-2012. Documenting and quantifying forest landscape changes such as fires, tornadoes, disease and logging.The most significant findings were that the overall rate of tropical deforestation is increasing. And global forests have experienced a net loss of 1.5M sq km during 2000-2012 due to both natural (disturbance) and human causes.

E)The detailed study was published today in the journalScience, High-Resolution Global Maps of 21st-Century Forest Cover Change. Key to the study’s success was the collaboration between scientists at the University of Maryland, who developed the models to analyze Landsat satellite data, and computer scientists at Google. Who then used Google Earth Engine technology to run these models on more than 650,000 Landsat images. While the analysis would have taken a single computer more than 15 years to perform.

Landsat 8, which launched into orbit in 2013, is the newest sensor in the USGS/NASA Landsat Program—superior to its predecessors in many ways. Processing imagery with Earth Engine. But not always over the same place, so we looked at millions of images. And took the clearest pixels to stitch together this cloud-free and seamless image. 

 

 To produce this new imagery. We used the same publicly available. Earth Engine APIs that scientists use to do things like track global tree cover, loss, and gain; predict Malaria outbreaks; and map global surface water over a 30 year period.

Like our previous mosaic. We mined data from nearly a petabyte of Landsat imagery—that’s. More than 700 trillion. individual pixels—to choose the best cloud-free pixels. To put that in perspective. 700 trillion pixels is 7,000 times more pixels than the estimated number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Or 70 times more pixels than the estimated number of galaxies in the Universe. Keeping Earth.

Open data is good for everyone To put that in perspective. 700 trillion pixels is 7,000 times more pixels than the estimated number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Or 70 times more pixels than the estimated number of galaxies in the Universe.

Landsat program and its commitment to free and accessible open data. Landsat, a joint program of the USGS and NASA. Has observed the Earth continuously from 1972 to the present day. And offers a wealth of information on the changes to the Earth’s surface over time. And it’s all available in Earth Engine!

Google Mapping Only clear skies on Google Maps and Earth

To celebrate the sunny days of summer (in the northern hemisphere at least). We’re unveiling new satellite imagery for all Google mapping products today. This stunning new imagery of the earth from space virtually eliminates clouds, includes refreshed imagery for regions of the world where high-resolution imagery is not yet available. And offers a more comprehensive and accurate view of the texture of our planet’s landscape. Google mapping 2

The new, even more beautiful global view in Maps and Earth.

In 2002 NASA released the Blue Marble, a global image of the earth with a resolution of one kilometer per pixel, based on data from NASA’s MODIS instrument. Updated in 2005 to twice the resolution, it has remained the canonical globally-uniform picture of the earth for over a decade.

With the Blue Marble as inspiration, we used Google Earth Engine technology to mine hundreds of terabytes of data from the USGS’s and NASA’s Landsat 7 satellite. The result is a seamless, globally-consistent image of the entire planet with a resolution of 15 meters per pixel, far finer than is possible with MODIS data alone.

To get a feel for the difference, here’s a comparison of the Grand Canyon, first from the Blue Marble Next Generation (courtesy NASA’s Earth Observatory), and then in our new Landsat-based imagery.Google mapping

The Landsat 7 satellite suffered a hardware failure early in its life that introduced striped artifacts into all of its images. By analyzing a large number of images we were able to virtually eliminate these stripes, as well as clouds and other atmospheric effects. The process was very similar to how we produced theglobal time-lapse imagery of the earth that we released last month. Google mapping castellon

The resulting 800,000 megapixel global image is so big that if you wanted to print it at a standard resolution of 300 dots per inch. You would need a piece of paper the size of a city block! Google mappingGoogle mapping south america

We’re proud of the progress we have made, but there is always room to keep improving. For example, although we have tried to minimize the impact of the stripe artifacts in the Landsat 7 images. They are still visible in some areas. There is more good news though: the new Landsat 8 satellite. Launched earlier this year, promises to capture even more beautiful and up-to-date imagery in the months and years ahead.

Science in the Classroom (SitC). Thought this was great research to bring into the classroom and make available to anyone online. SitC packages annotated research papers with supplemental teaching materials to help pre-college. And college students understand the structure and workings of scientific research. SitC and Google Earth Engine built the Global Forest Change Explorer to make Dr. Hansen’s data accessible to a younger audience.
