April 3, 2014

Today we’re joined by Dr. Jane Goodall, primatologist and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots program. In this post, Dr. Goodall shares her thoughts on how today’s technology can enable more people around the world to make a difference in their communities. Join Dr. Goodall for a celebratory Birthday Hangout on Air today at 11 a.m. PDT/2 p.m. EDT. -Ed.When I first set foot on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in 1960 to study chimpanzee behavior, I carried with me notebooks, pencils and a pair of second-hand binoculars. I was, at the time, a young woman with no scientific training, but had a strong passion for learning about animals in Africa. In later years I founded the Jane Goodall Institute, dedicated to preserving the habitat of chimpanzees and other animals. Today, the mapping technology available to all of us is completely changing the potential for animal and environmental research. My trip in 1960 would have looked quite different today. You have much more power at your fingertips, and you don’t even have to leave your home. Tools like Google Earth let you visit the shores of Lake Tanganyika with just a few keystrokes. And in Gombe, local villagers are using Android smartphones and tablets, in conjunction with Google Maps Engine and Earth Engine, to monitor changes in the forest habitat that affect chimpanzee populations. Technology makes it so easy for people to find and share information and to understand the world around them. And once we understand, we can start to foster positive change. Lake Tanganyika Google Earth Using tech

The Jane Goodall Institute engages local communities from Tanzania, Uganda and across Africa to collect data on forests, wildlife and human activities using Google Android handheld devices.

That’s one of the reasons we started the Roots & Shoots program to connect young people with the knowledge and tools they need to solve problems in their communities. The projects undertaken by these young people help them learn important science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills while developing real leadership capabilities. Today, Roots & Shoots is launching a new community mapping tutorial for young people to help them use digital mapping technology to identify and address needs in their community. If you’re an educator, we offer online professional development to help you fit our youth leadership model into your classroom and curriculum. You can sign up for the Roots & Shoots MOOC to learn more. Lake Tanganyika Google Earth Using tech

Today, on my 80th birthday, my wish is for young people around the world to think about the ways you can use technology to learn more about the wonderful world we share. Then, to take action, and inspire others to do the same. You have the power to do so much more than I did in 1960, to spark change I could only imagine back then. And you can do it no matter where in the world you are. Lake Tanganyika Google Earth Using tech

G)Our quest to create the most comprehensive and accurate map of the world is ongoing, but we’re happy to take a pause and share some impressive progress that our Google Maps and Earth imagery teams have recently made. We’ve refreshed the high resolution aerial and satellite imagery for many places around the world, and released some new 45 degree imagery as well.New 45° imagery available for 51 cities:

H)In addition, 45° imagery is now available in Google Maps for 37 U.S. and 14 international locations. Below are some examples of the beautiful new views from Pisa, Italy and Winnipeg, Canada.

I)Probably one of the most famous landmarks in the world is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Its construction started back in 1173 and extended over a period of almost 350 years. Due to increasing incline during the last Century, a stabilization effort was performed that took almost two decades to complete. Today the tower is said to be safe from collapsing for at least 200 more years.

F)2005 was the beginning of Google Earth’s evolution. As well. In August of that year. Hurricane Katrina showed us how useful mapping tools like Earth could be for crisis response efforts. Rescue workers compared before and after Satellite imagery in Google Earth to better locate where people were stranded. And in the years after. With more than 2 billion downloads by people in nearly every country in the world. Earth has enabled people to discover new coral reefs. Journey to theMoon and into deep space, find long-lost parents. Clear landmines and much more.

Rome really is an eternal city. With a history spanning over 2500 years and regimes from the early kingdom, through the republic, the empire, and later as the heart of the Catholic faith in the Vatican city, each has made their mark on the current urban architectural landscape of Rome. Now, with the release of thousands of new 3D buildings for the city, you can explore the blending of the ages in layered construction of Rome from within Google Earth.
Let’s start our exploration in the ruins of the ancient Roman forum, home of the original Roman republic. From here we can easily travel to some of the subsequent Imperial buildings such as the. Colosseum (AKA the Flavian Amphitheater) and Trajan’s Market and Column.

explore ancient modern rome

Looking towards the Colosseum through the Roman Forum
Next, we’ll head Northwest, towards the Pantheon. And Piazza Navona. The Pantheon is a great example of the layered reuse of buildings in Rome; originally built in the Republican period, the Pantheon was retrofitted with the front portico in the Imperial period. And then later converted into a church. The shape of. Piazza Navona also displays its historic foundation as the site was originally the Stadium of Domitian in the Imperial era.

Central Rome showing the Pantheon and Piazza Navona
Lastly, let’s head over to the Vatican City. Where we can see great examples of the Renaissance and Baroque architecture of the city in. Saint Peter’s Basilica and the colonnade by Bernini around St. Peter’s square.

There is much more to explore in Italy’s modern capital. So have a look around this beautiful city! And don’t forget. A few years ago we also released ancient Rome in 3D which allows you to see. Rome as it was in 320 AD.To see Rome in  for yourself, use. Google Maps with Earth view or turn on. Google Earth’s “3D Buildings” layer and search for “Rome, Italy”. Alternatively, you can download this KML tour from the. Google Earth Gallery to take a virtual tour of the 3D landmarks for yourself. As always, feel free to use. Google Building Maker or Google SketchUp to make any improvements or additions to the city. Or to model your own town.

Happy touring!

B)Satellite imagery. To celebrate the sunny days of summer (in the northern hemisphere at least), today we’re launching new satellite imagery for Google’s mapping products. This stunning global view is virtually cloud-free and includes refreshed imagery in more locations—giving you an even more accurate and comprehensive view of our planet’s landscape.

Satellite imagery. The new, even more beautiful global view in Maps and Earth.

C)Our satellite imagery is usually created like a quilt: we stitch together imagery of different parts of the world. Using a process similar to how we produced the global time-lapse imagery of the Earth, we took hundreds of terabytes of data from the USGS’s and NASA’s Landsat 7 satellite. Sometimes dozens of photos of a single spot in the world. And analyzed the photos to compute a clear view of every place, even in tropical regions that are always at least partly cloudy.

The result is a single, beautiful 800,000 megapixel image of the world, which can be viewed in Earth and Maps when you’re zoomed out to a global view.  This global image is so big, if you wanted to print it at a standard resolution of 300 dots per inch you’d need a piece of paper the size of a city block!. This image is then blended into our highest resolution imagery. Giving a beautiful cloud-free global view and detailed images in the same seamless map.

D)Central Papua. Indonesia: before and after.

This update also includes refreshed imagery in many regions of the world. Especially in areas where high-resolution imagery is not available. Including parts of Russia. Indonesia and central Africa.

E)Saudi Arabia: before and after, showing increased agricultural expansion.

You can see the new satellite imagery by going to Google Maps and turning on satellite view. Or by opening Google Earth. And zooming out. And to read more about what went into creating this imagery. Check out our detailed post on the Lat Long blog. Have fun exploring!
